The National Assembly Member for Banjul South Constituency, Hon Fatoumatta Touma Njie has expressed shock and embarrassment over the salary increment and other remunerations of the Speaker and Parliamentarians. She called on the NAMs to reject the bid.
Hon Njie made these remarks during the National Assembly adjournment debate on the 2023 budget estimate tabled by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Seedy Keita.
“The government does not love the country and her people. A country that is claiming to be poor is expending over D6 billion on salaries alone and we still say we are poor?” She asked.

The NAM added that we should nurture the future of children by investing in sectors that will benefit all like education and health rather than elevating ourselves at the expense of poor tax payers.
“Seeing the salary of the Speaker increased, I felt ashamed to call myself an Honorable member. I gave myself for service not for the poor taxpayers to feed my family and l. When I saw this, I was embarrassed that was why I did not want to attend this budget session” the Banjul South NAM argued.
Hon Njie stated that she took an oath to serve his country not to enrich herself arguing that the constitution is against deliberate self enrichment.
“Increasing our salaries is deliberately enriching ourselves and that’s an embarrassment. It was in this National Assembly here that we sat to deny the salary increment of Ministers even though they went behind our back to increase it for themselves and that’s their business ”Hon Njie charged
